By using just a simple mouth swab, Living DNA uses advanced technology to read your genetic code and to discover your family’s ancestry. Living DNA deciphers traces of the past that are hidden within DNA identifying areas from up to 80 worldwide regions.
The results are displayed via an online interactive secure portal. Results can also be printed in a coffee table book for an additional cost.

Everyone is able to take a Living DNA test and will receive their family ancestry and direct motherline results.  Only Males carry a Y chromosome and because of this only Males will receive the results of their direct father line.
If you are female although you will not receive your direct fatherline haplogroup you will still receive paternal information which is reflected in your family ancestry results.

Taking your sample is fast and painless. After ordering your test, they will send you a Living DNA collection kit, containing a simple mouth swab. The first step is to create an account and activate your kit using the unique activation code located on the inside of your kit box.
Please note that there is no need to write anything on the swab tubes regarding dates, addresses, etc.

Behind the scenes here at Living DNA HQ, the science team has been working really hard, with a little help from our customers who have opted into their research program.
If you’ve opted into their research, they have used your data to build a bigger and more reflective reference data set, which means they can be even more confident in their predictions to you. They can refine your previous results, hopefully cleaning up the small percentages that were not reflective of your ancestry and giving you a far more precise picture of your personal history.
They have been studying genetic data from people who have a known paper trail of grandparents living in the same region to build a new, much bigger, and more robust panel which in turn is more representative of different regional populations.
