Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Editions Compared: Standard vs Vault
It helps to know what you’re paying for, and the price for Modern Warfare 4 depends partially on the edition you choose. There are two versions: the Standard Edition (available for physical & digital) and the Vault Edition (digital-only).
Which edition should I buy? The Standard Edition gives you the whole game: campaign, multiplayer and DMZ. The Vault Edition mainly adds extra weapons, operator bundles, DMZ bonus content and the first battle pass, making it more suitable for players who would buy those separately anyway. At £99.99, Vault costs £40 more than the Standard Edition on Steam and £30 more than on console download stores. So if you’re a casual player, Standard is the edition for you.
What if I want to upgrade later? If you purchase the digital version of the Standard Edition and change your mind, you can upgrade to the Vault through the in-game store or your platform’s store. Physical copies can’t be upgraded, so if you want the Vault later on, buy digital.
For more details on what’s on each edition, be sure to check out Activision’s official Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 page.

The True Cost of Playing Modern Warfare 4
The price on the box isn’t always the full cost and Modern Warfare 4 is no exception. Here are a few things to keep in mind while you mull over whether your game library needs a new addition:
- Online subscriptions - Online multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential on Xbox, PS Plus on PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online on Switch 2. Each subscription comes with an additional fee that you’ll need to factor in, especially if you’re planning on squading up with friends.
- Storage space - Call of Duty games are typically large downloads and Modern Warfare 4 is around 115 to 160 GB depending on what extras you install. You may need extra storage for the game, which costs extra if you’re on console.
- Battle passes and bundles - They’re optional, but add up quickly.
Is Modern Warfare 4 Worth It? What the Reviews Say
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 scored 8.5/10 in Game Informer’s review and was dubbed a solid sendoff for the rebooted Modern Warfare series. The reviewer praised the multiplayer and new game modes (including a 24v24 mode called Combat Outpost), all while finding the campaign fun despite some character arcs feeling rushed. There were some minor technical issues, such as slow framerates during some campaign scenes and frequent texture loading, but none of these was game-breaking.
The Guardian headlined the game as a “thrilling airport novel of a game” in their review, praising subtle references made to previous titles in the series and the 6 hours of blood-pumping content crammed into the campaign. Despite some letdowns with the pacing of certain character arcs, the reviewer describes the last installation of the Modern Warfare series as a “bombastic thrill ride”.
All in all, the price looks reasonable for the amount of content on offer, especially if you play multiplayer regularly.

Physical vs Digital: Which is Cheaper?
For every console, physical wins. Argos charges £58.99 for PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 physical copies. This saves you £11 in comparison to the digital download on console storefronts. On PC, Steam beats the console stores in the digital category with their £59.99 price tag. If you opt for the Vault Edition, the price sits at £99.99 regardless of which retailer you choose, so the saving there will have to come somewhere other than the retailer.
