What is Veganuary?

Veganuary 2025: Scrabble tiles spelling ‘vegan’ on a blue plate Started in 2014 by a British non-profit organisation of the same name, Veganuary is an annual event aimed at educating people on veganism and promoting and encouraging the lifestyle. The challenge encourages people to take part in the month of January, which can be seen in the name, combining “vegan“ and “January“, however, you can start the challenge at any time.

To take part in the challenge, all you have to do is head over to the official Veganuary website and sign up using your email address. Once you have signed up, you will receive 10 meal plans, a celebrity cookbook, nutrition guides and 31 coaching emails, all for free! If you would like to take it a step further, you can donate to the organisation. This can be a one-time or recurring donation to aid in their efforts to promote a vegan diet, reduce meat consumption and protect animals and the environment.

3 Common Misconceptions About Veganism

Veganuary 2025: Blocks spelling ‘Plant based’ placed on a white countertop A vegan diet is plant-based, meaning it mainly consists of fruits, vegetables, seeds, legumes, nuts and similar food items. It does not consist of meat or any animal products, including dairy and eggs. The vegan diet or veganism is commonly misunderstood and has a few misconceptions attached to it, here are 3 of them:

1. Veganism and vegetarianism are the same

This is false. The two are similar as they promote plant-based diets, however, the vegan diet is a stricter version of the vegetarian diet. A vegan diet completely cuts out animal and meat products, whereas in a vegetarian diet, animal and meat products are also excluded but there are variations depending on whether an individual eats dairy, eggs or fish.

2. Vegan diets lack protein

People mistakenly believe that the only way to get protein is through eating meat or animal products. Plant-based proteins exist and can be found in foods such as tofu, a variety of nuts, seeds, legumes, oats and much more. When thinking about protein, it can help to pause and ask yourself where the animals you eat and get your protein from get their protein (hint: they consume plant-based proteins). You can also get your required protein through supplements. For guidance, read our blog on The Best Vegan Protein Powders.

3. A vegan diet is expensive

A vegan diet does not have to be expensive. Your diet may already consist of a balance of animal and plant-based products. By cutting meat and animal products out of your monthly grocery list, you could see a decrease in how much you spend. Much like a ‘regular’ diet, budgeting and conscious spending can go a long way when on a vegan diet.

Shopping Vegan

Veganuary 2025: A woman holding a shopping basket with fruits and vegetables in net bags Although there are many vegan stores, their prices can be on the higher side. "To keep things simple and affordable for Veganuary and beyond, you can head over to the supermarket you always shop from and also use Food & Drink discount codes and Supermarket discount codes to save," says Marylyn Ncube. When shopping for vegan food, the most obvious thing to do is to avoid animal and meat products, however, you should also be on the lookout for vegan-friendly options. Check that food items have the Vegan Trademark or are labelled as ‘Vegan’ or ‘Vegan-friendly’.

Holland & Barrett has a vegan range of food items and supplements that you can save on with Holland & Barrett discount codes and Supplement discount codes. Examples of vegan products that you can find are soy mince, plant-based mushrooms and vegan chocolate. You can easily find and save on a variety of vegan-friendly and Vegan Trademark foods with:

If you enjoy eating out, you can still do so by finding vegan-friendly options. Burger King, for example, has vegan alternatives on their menu which you can save on with a Burger King discount code. When ordering in, you can use Takeaway & Delivery discount codes to save on delivery fees.
