World Book Day (7 March 2024) is just under a month away! For those who aren’t in the loop, World Book Day is an international celebration of reading created by UNESCO. The holiday’s mission is to help encourage children to read for pleasure and one of the ways it achieves this is by handing out World Book Day tokens that are redeemed for books. How To Get World Book Day Tokens And How To Use Them

There are two kinds of World Book Day tokens: physical and digital tokens. The physical tokens are generally handed out to children at schools and early years settings (day nurseries, pre-schools, etc). They can also be found in children’s magazines and inside McDonald’s Happy Meals! Physical tokens can be exchanged for a free £1 book or used as a coupon “to get £1 off a book or audiobook costing at least £2.99 at some retailers” according to The Sun.

Digital tokens on the other hand can be downloaded from the World Book Day website. These tokens come with a barcode that can be scanned from a phone screen or printed out & presented in-store. It’s important to note that you should check if your local bookstore can accept digital tokens.

Please note: Both physical and digital tokens are not eligible for online purchases.

Where Can I Use World Book Day Tokens

According to the World Book Day charity, they “work with a variety of different retailers from high street bookstores to independent bookstores.” You can use their online search feature to search for participating bookstores near you or visit any of the retailers below:

World Book Day may still be a few weeks away, but your little ones can start exchanging their tokens for free books as early as the 15th of February! “There is a wide range of £1 books for your little ones to choose from this year, including ones for new readers and teenagers,” says our in-house bookworm, Jessica Pinker. Beginning:

Fluent:

• Onyeka and the Secret Superhero - Fans of Marvel and Percy Jackson are going to love this action-packed adventure. Onyeka must embark on a mission with her friends to investigate some strange weather patterns in a remote village.
• Can You Get Jellyfish in Space? - Dr Shelia Kanani believes you can! In this wonderful book, she delves into the strange cast of animals that have travelled into space.
