The Game Awards premiered on the 7th of December honouring the strides AAA and indie developers have made this year, as well as showcasing new games in development that left many gamers excited for what's to come. However, one game in particular has dino fans jumping for joy. According to our gaming expert, Jessica Pinker, “The trailer for Jurassic Park Survival game was revealed at the award ceremony, instantly making a name for itself by being an action-adventure game (with hints of survival horror) rather than a simulation management game.” In this blog, we give you all the details on the soon-to-be latest addition to the Jurassic Park franchise.

In this guide, we will tell you:

  • What happened to the original game announced in 2001
  • What to expect from the revived version
  • What platforms is it expected to come out on

The Original

Originally Jurassic Park Survival was set to be published in 2001 by Konami. Savage Entertainment began developing the game in October 2000 and wanted to base it off Jurassic Park III, however, the movie was also in production at the time. This ultimately led the developers to decide to have the game be inspired rather than based on the film. The game was expected to be released on PC, GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox, however, development ended in July 2001 due to payment conflicts between Savage Entertainment and Vivendi Universal.

In terms of gameplay, “Jurassic Park: Survival was to be played from a third-person perspective with David Vaughn, a member of a security team, as the main character,” according to Wikipedia. The game would have incorporated elements from both survival horror and action-adventure games with a focus on having players outwit dinosaurs rather than taking them head-on.

The Revival

Announced at The Game Awards 2023, the revived Jurassic Park Survival game is taking on a different approach from its management sim predecessors. The revived version plans to be a single-player action-adventure game that will test the stealth and survival skills of players. Players will be expected to utilise the available resources on the island whilst evading hoards of dinosaurs in an intense experience. According to PCGamesN, players will take on the “role of Dr. Maya Joshi, an InGen scientist who was unable to evacuate Isla Nublar when the dinosaurs broke out of their enclosures.” The trailer showcases some of the nailbiting scenarios Dr Joshi will overcome, including hiding away from velociraptors in a kitchen and coming face-to-face with a T-rex at the iconic Jurassic Park gate. No release date has been finalised yet for the game but are fans hoping it will come out in 2024.
