For decades families across the country have been debating which is better: a real or fake Christmas tree. While many seem to prefer the artificial version for its practicality, others still argue that the real deal is more authentic. However, according to Popular Mechanics, “there's more to consider—including cost, safety, and environmental impact.” In this LDV blog, we give you the pros and cons of each tree so we can finally settle this real vs fake Christmas tree debate.
In this guide, we will tell you:
- Everything you need to know before buying an artificial Christmas tree
- Everything you need to know before opting for a real Christmas tree
Artificial Christmas Tree
Fake Christmas trees are artificially manufactured fir trees that are produced specifically as decoration for the holiday season. They were first produced in nineteenth-century Germany to curb rapid deforestation within the country. They later became increasingly popular in the early twentieth century and began making their way to other countries, like North America. Traditionally the first artificial trees were made from dyed goose feathers, but today they can be manufactured from a wide variety of materials (including PVC, aluminium & fibre optics).
- Cost - An artificial Christmas tree can save you money in the long run if you plan on putting one up every year. They take away the yearly expense of finding a real Christmas tree and can last up to 10 years, meaning you only have to pay once to have a Christmas tree every year for almost a decade!
- Sustainability - While fake Christmas trees will last for up to a decade, they are generally not that sustainable. They are made from non-renewable resources like PVC, that can't biodegrade or be recycled. This leads to them taking up space in landfills when they reach the end of their lifecycle. That being said according to our sustainability expert (Jessica Pinker) “there are a few eco-friendly alternatives on the market that customers can look into if they want to lower their carbon footprint.”
- Fire Safety - Generally artificial Christmas trees are less likely to catch on fire than real ones. This is due to the fact that they are made from PVC which is a commonly used fire retardant material. That being said, it's in your best interest to ensure the one you're opting for is fire retardant and is positioned away from any heat sources.
- Maintenance - If you're looking for a tree that's low maintenance then a fake tree is the one for you. Fake Christmas trees don't need to be watered and rarely shed any of their needles. All you have to do is put them up, decorate them and enjoy the festive ambience.

Real Christmas Tree
Natural or real Christmas trees hold a much older heritage than their artificial counterparts. They originated in Germany during the Middle Ages and were said to represent the Garden of Eden. Families would display the trees in their homes on Christmas Eve and hang apples from their branches. Later in the nineteenth century as Germans began migrating across Europe, they brought their Christmas trees with them. In fact, Christmas trees became a popular festive tradition in London after Queen Victoria and the royal family were illustrated around one in 1848.
- Cost - If you’re not one to put a Christmas tree up every year, then a real one is a good option for you. They are generally more affordable than the artificial ones and only last a few weeks at most. However, you will need to invest in one every time you plan to put up the tree which makes them an ongoing expense.
- Sustainability - Did you know that natural Christmas trees are considered more sustainable than artificial ones? This is due to the fact that the natural trees are sourced from local farms that plant up to three trees in the place of each tree they cut down. Additionally, natural trees can be recycled, meaning they won't take up space in landfills.
- Fire Safety - It goes without saying that real Christmas trees can be a fire hazard, especially if they dry out. That's why it's essential that you water it regularly and keep it away from heat sources. It's also a good idea to get rid of it as soon as possible after Christmas day as you don't want to leave it to dry up.
- Maintenance - Natural Christmas trees are notorious for the amount of maintenance they need. They need to be regularly watered and shed many more needles than their artificial counterparts. Additionally, when you first get your tree, you'll need to saw off a few inches of its trunk to help keep it fresh.
