A GoldCar discount code goes in after you have searched for your dates and chosen a car. Once the car is selected, a box for the promotional code appears with an Apply Code button, and the new total shows before you move on to rates and extras. GoldCar suggests signing in to your Club Goldcar account before you start. Codes normally take money off the hire rate rather than extras such as an additional driver or a sat nav, some aren't valid with the Unique Pack, and none can be used with the Crazy rate. If a code is turned down, check those points first, then the pick up country and booking dates in its terms.

There is nothing to deliver with car hire, so the practical side is about the handover. You collect the car from the office you booked, usually at or near the airport, and take it back to the same place unless you booked a one way hire. The car comes with a full tank under GoldCar's Full-Full policy, so you pay a fuel deposit at the counter and get it back when you return the car full. A second deposit, the excess, is held against damage and other costs unless you have taken Relax, Super Relax or Mega Relax cover, and it is released in full if nothing is charged.

Many bookings can be paid in advance from the customer area on GoldCar's site, while others are part paid or settled at the desk; the choices appear as you book. Most offices let you drop the car off outside opening hours by leaving the keys in a drop box, but offices with shorter hours only take returns while staff are there.

To change or cancel a booking, sign in, open My Bookings and choose the reservation. A cancelled booking can be reactivated until the collection time has passed. Non refundable rates such as Crazy can't be changed or cancelled at all. Driving licence rules depend on where you pick the car up, so check GoldCar's requirements for that country before you travel.

Key'n Go is GoldCar's way of skipping the rental desk. You book online and check in, then head straight to a self service kiosk at the airport. There you type in your booking number or scan the QR code on your phone, pick a car from the models on offer and take the keys out to the car park.

The Key'n Go rate bundles the things people usually sort out at the counter: cover with no excess, a full tank on the Full-Full basis, roadside assistance, the young driver option and free cancellation, with no counter fees on top. It suits a late landing or a trip with children, when the last thing you want is a queue.

Kiosks are at more than 30 airports. In Spain they include Alicante, Malaga, Barcelona, Madrid, Palma, Ibiza, Tenerife South and Lanzarote; in Portugal, Faro, Lisbon, Porto and Funchal; in Italy, Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Pisa and Catania; and in France, Nice, Marseille, Bordeaux and Toulouse. GoldCar sometimes runs promotions only for Key'n Go bookings, so it is worth comparing that rate with the standard one when you book.
