What Is Covered In Travel Insurance For A Long Stay Holiday?

It’s that time of the year again, everyone is planning to go on holiday. Nothing is better than going on holiday knowing that you have travel insurance that will give you peace of mind that no matter what happens you are covered.
What Is Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance can provide financial protection if something happens to you while travelling or on vacation. It covers a lot of things, from lost luggage to medical expenses in case of illness or accident. Learn how it works with LDV, why it's important, and what to watch out for when cancelling it.
What Is Covered In Travel Insurance?
If something goes wrong, travelling without insurance can cost you dearly. Depending on the policy, travel insurance can cover a variety of conditions.
Most policies cover:
- Lost or theft of luggage (some policies also have luggage coverage)
- Emergency medical expenses
- For any delays or cancellations of your trip
- Travel or service interruptions
- Legal fees if you are sued for property damage or personal injury
Things To Consider When Taking Out A Long Term Travel Insurance
Sometimes we just want to take a break from everything that’s happening around us, therefore, we take longer holidays so we could relax and spend enough time with our loved ones. Choosing long-stay travel insurance will be best for you. Here are a few things to consider when comparing long-stay insurance policies:
- When choosing an insurance policy, always choose long-stay insurance. Backpacker insurance will not cover the things you require for a longer holiday stay.
- The duration of a long-term insurance policy is usually one month to six months. But those going on a one-year road trip—like a gap year adventure—must find "backpacker insurance." This is true even if you want to live in luxury.
- Just like the policy, the long-term insurance policy covers medical expenses, cancellation fees and baggage fees etc. However, given the diversity of activities people do while travelling, you might have to double-check whether certain adventures are covered as well. Long-stay insurance may also include other coverage, such as working abroad, this will have to be confirmed with the type of coverage you choose.
What Activities Can You Do When You Have Travel Insurance?
Some travel insurance covers or policies do offer coverage for extreme sports or activities. This is completely dependent on the insurer. Some insurers offer you coverage for just basic activities these usually include leisure activities such as swimming, cycling, and non-high-risk sports. Any Hig-risk leisure sports might require you to take an extra cover for that.
Therefore, it is best to check the policy details before purchasing to make sure you are purchasing the right policy for the type of vacation you are planning.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary When You Have A GHIC Card?

GHIC is the successor to the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). This card is invalid in EEA countries or Switzerland and despite its name, you are not entitled to treatment outside the EU. This card enables you to receive temporary health care when you are on holiday, training or business trip in another country.
Where Can I Use My GHIC Card?
The GHIC card is valid throughout the European Union except for Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Until a new agreement is reached, you remain entitled to appropriate medical treatment in Norway (on presentation of your passport). The British government said it was working to reach an agreement with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
What Does GHIC Cover?
GHIC is not a travel insurance, therefore, there are certain things that it will cover that travel insurance might not cover and vice versa. Note that other countries may not offer the same coverage and services as the NHS and some countries require patients to pay for their care. Therefore, having both the GHIC card and travel insurance can be of great benefit to you because it will provide both high medical care in a foreign country and will also provide protection for many aspects of your vacation.
What Does A GHIC Card Cover?
- Government-approved emergency or emergency medical care
- Pre-emergency or long-term medical care that will take place immediately during the holidays
- Normal childcare
- Dialysis kidney failure
What A GHIC Does Not Cover:
GHIC does not cover:
- Repatriation - - in some serious cases you will need to be brought back to the UK for emergency treatment. This also applies if you die abroad and your body needs to be sent back to your country. Travel insurance should cover this.
- Additional expenses related to your situation - In the event of a serious illness or injury, you may need additional assistance. For example, transportation for medical supplies, aircraft and assistance for family members. Your travel insurance will cover this cost, but GHIC will not.
- Rescue - Some travel insurance policies do cover this- for example, winter sports options - cover ambulance or mountain rescue.
- Delays - Some travel insurance policies may allow you to claim delays and cancellations.
- Theft and Loss - If you are robbed or lose valuables while abroad.
- Cruise Ship Holidays - Not applicable to GHIC cruise ships.
Top 5 Things To Think About When Choosing Travel Insurance

- Declare pre-existing medical conditions - If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you must declare it to your insurer, even if you consider it to be minor. Not doing so could result in your policy being invalidated should you make a claim (and your insurance company may request your medical records to conduct an investigation, which it has the right to do). This could be disastrous as medical care abroad and repatriation costs can run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.
- Compare policies - The easiest way to find the best deal on travel insurance is by comparing policies online. Remember, the cheapest policy may not be the right one for you, so do read the T&Cs. You can also compare prices with the top 5 travel insurances mentioned above.
- Buy your travel insurance when you book your holiday - Travel insurance may not be the first thing you think about after booking a trip, but buying it when you book your holiday is a wise move in case you have to cancel your holiday for any reason. That way, you can claim if you can’t go due to an illness or an injury.
- Don't get caught out by a hefty excess - Always check the excess amount on your policy. It is the amount you will have to pay towards any claim, so make sure it is affordable – even if that means paying more for your policy.
- Ensure that your travel insurance provider has a 24-hour helpline - Should anything go wrong while you're away, you want to be able to get through to your insurance provider. So, ensure that the company you buy your policy with has a round-the-clock, 24-hour helpline via which you can speak to someone whenever necessary.
- Pick your policy type carefully - You will be offered the choice between a single-trip and a multi-trip annual policy. The latter will cost you more. However, if you are a frequent traveller (or plan to go away more than twice in a year, including UK travel), multi-trip should work out cheaper than buying a separate policy every time you travel. If the whole family is going on holiday, meanwhile, a family policy could prove more cost-effective, and easier than sorting out a separate policy for each person.
