What’s Expected To Happen To The Food Prices (UK)
Consumers across the country have been struggling to keep dinner on the table due to the uphill battle against the rapidly increasing cost of food and energy. UK food price inflation peaked at 19.1% in March causing outrage from the public. However, it has steadily dropped since its peak. Over the course of August the UK food price inflation dropped from 13.4% to 11.5% which helped the food prices (UK) to lower from 7.6% to 6.9%. Food prices are expected to drop further, but the public will only receive confirmation of this on 20 September 2023.
Our Top 5 Tips On How To Save On The Cost Of Food
According to an article by The Guardian, “the rate at which food prices are rising has continued to slow but stubbornly high grocery prices mean the cost of the weekly shop is now as big a concern as energy bills”. Many shoppers have switched to alternative brands to help ease the pressure of inflation on their budgets, many of which have turned to the supermarkets’ own-label products. Others have changed supermarkets completely, opting for stores such as Aldi or Lidl due to their discounted prices. To help ease the cost of food, we here at LDV have put together a list of our top 5 tips on how to save at the supermarket.
- Eat Beforehand - It’s never a good idea for you or your wallet to go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Research has shown that hungry shoppers are more likely to spend more than they would when shopping with a full stomach. That’s why it’s better to head to the supermarket after lunch or have a quick snack before heading out.
- Meal Prep - According to Investopedia, “our fast-paced society encourages convenienceโand the grocery store has capitalised on this trend.” Ready-made meals are a great convenience for those on tight schedules but more often than not they come with a steep price tag. For those on a budget, it’s better to buy the ingredients and make the meal yourself. This works hand-in-hand with meal prepping as it helps you get an idea of what groceries you need each week and helps prevent overspending on items you don’t need. Besides dedicating a few hours each weekend to prepare a week’s meals will help you save time later when your schedule is less forgiving.
- Buy in Bulk - Perfect for non-perishable items that you use often, buying in bulk can help you save in the long run. Try visiting stores such as Costco and compare the prices of singular items with ones in bulk. If the per-unit cost is lower then bulk is definitely the way to go. Just ensure you have the space to store it! Don’t forget that you can also use a Costco discount code to save even more on your bulk purchases.
- Sign Up for a Store Rewards Card - If youโre a loyal customer of a specific grocery store, why not sign up for their rewards card? Different stores offer different rewards for your loyalty but at the end of the day, they can help you save. Some rewards programs even offer exclusive discounts during the holidays or sales periods so it’s a good idea to sign up for their newsletter as well.
