When Pantherella originally opened for business in 1937, it was known as Midlands Hosiery Mills, a reputable manufacturer of women's knickers. In 1945, they changed their name and started selling Pantherella Fine English Socks, which became a legend. Louis Goldschmidt was the trailblazer behind Pantherella; he saw the future of fine-gauge English socks. He was sick of making big, boring, painful socks for guys and thought there might be a big market for seamless, light-colored, elegant socks. Goldschmidt persuaded P.A.
Bentley, a local manufacturer of machinery, to create a specialised sock machine through rigorous negotiation. Men's lightweight socks were in high demand. Before the rivals realised how clever Goldschmidt's design plans were, he had already established the benchmark for the industry, casting them into the background. Pantherella was known for producing the best socks in the world.
