Love Play is a drama, which debuted in 1839, is a Restoration production. It narrates the tale of a serf who develops feelings for a countess in spite of her father's disapproval and the possibility of execution for their illicit relationship. Because of his lesser social rank as a serf, Sir Rupert, the Countess's father, disapproves of the serf Stephen's romantic engagement with her. Sir Rupert makes threats to have Stephen put to death in an effort to keep them apart.
The Love Play ultimately praises the success of real love when the Countess and Stephen manage to get beyond the obstacles and live together in spite of the dangers and social stigma. The historical setting of "Love" reflects the struggles and victories of love in the face of prejudice and social restraints by fusing themes of love, social class, and early to mid-19th century conventions.
